The Nerdy Part of Food Combining

gutMany of you know that I’m a big fan of food combining. This is something I learned how to do when I was on B.E.D to heal yeast overgrowth and now years later continue to do with each meal. Practicing this one principle each time I eat is one of the reasons why I rarely get bloated or have stomach issues.

Proper food combining happens when you eat foods that are compatible with each other. That go well with each other. In nerdy terms of digestive chemistry the term proper food combining means”what foods to eat with what”.

Different food groups (starches, protein, fruit) require different digestion times and different gastric juices to break ’em down. Sound complicated? It’s not! I’ve been food combining for years. So do my kids 🙂

For example, in order to digest properly…Starches need carbohydrate-splitting enzymes. Proteins need protein-splitting enzymes.

When food isn’t properly combined (i.e. eating fruit with meat), the gastric juices in your stomach will neutralize each other. This can lead to digestion that isn’t as efficient as it could be. Food can also remain in your stomach and intestines for long periods of time. Fermenting, putrefying, and creating toxins. Which often equals bloating, pressure, and flatulence >:O

Signs of poor digestion…

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Heartburn
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach Pains
  • Weight Gain
  • Poor Absorption of Nutrients

Great example of bad food combining!

Basically, no matter how healthy your food may be…if you’re combining it poorly it can become toxic once in your stomach and intestines. And cause you indigestion and discomfort.

Our body has to also work that much harder to digest poor food combinations. In this way we jeopardize our own health and healing. As our body/immune system is preoccupied with digesting crazy combinations of food!
