Why I Became a Placenta Encapsulationist


Since I was a child, I have felt an incredible pull to new mom’s and babies. When I was 5 years old I would walk around my neighborhood looking for pink and blue balloons that meant a baby had been born. I knocked on the door and gave the family my homemade “mother’s helper” card, eventually becoming an extended part of their lives.

My mother ran a day care and Montessori school, so kids and parents were always around. Our home was also the hub for the home birthing community and when I was 6 and 9 yrs. old my sister and brother were born at home…my job was to cut the umbilical cord.

At a young age, I knew my life work would involve newborns and their families.

My own pregnancies were challenging due to a rare condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum (morning sickness x 100). It took everything I had to move through this time. The birthing process itself was relatively easy but I was fatigued, anemic, and struggled with anxiety and insomnia for weeks after.

I am intrigued by placenta encapsulation.

I learned about placenta encapsulation from a friend who worked as one in New York. She shared photo’s of a couple placentas she had worked on and the process of making them into capsules. I was in awe; especially after hearing about the benefits a mom can experience from taking placenta capsules…

As a long-time Holistic Nutritionist, I understand the value of nutrient-dense food (i.e. marrow, liverstock). It makes perfect sense to me for a new mom to ingest her placenta in capsule form as this vital organ can replenish the body after the hard work of pregnancy and labor … AND the hard work that still lies ahead … like the sleepless nights, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery.

Given how difficult my own postpartum period was I decided that this was an important service to offer new mom’s in my community. At the time there were not any Encapsulators in VT and NH and so, I applied. I took the course, completed my certification, ordered materials, and jumped right in.

Best part about my work? Seeing a new mom move through the first weeks with a smile on her face! In this way, I see firsthand how placenta capsules made with the Traditional Chinese Method (TCM) can help many women feel more bonded to their babies and keep up with her daily tasks. When a husband calls to say “thank you Tara for all that you have done for my wife”, I get a smile on my face 🙂
