Bolus Recipe for Vaginal Yeast Infections


Boluses (a.k.a. ovules, vaginal suppositories) are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and known to provide relief for vaginal yeast infections. These tube-like shapes are solid at room temperature, but once inserted in the vagina will melt and the oils and herbs inside of them absorb into the vagina. 

I used to get vaginal yeast infections often and thought it a normal part of being female. Well, the frequency with which I got one increased after my second baby was born and shortly after I was diagnosed with systemic yeast overgrowth. This explained the endless infections I had been getting ‘down below’ for so much of my life. I recovered with The Body Ecology Diet (B.E.D.); a gut healing protocol that is rich in unsalted probiotic food and avoids gluten, sugar, and yeast. Two months into the diet, and after moving through the notorious die-off stage, I no longer needed boluses to relieve the itchy, burning discomfort.

Now, I am in my 40’s and rarely get a yeast infection. Woohoo!! When I do, they are mild and all I do is pop in a bolus before bed for nearly instant relief. Here is an online quiz to see if yeast overgrowth is an issue for you. 

Bolus Recipe


2 ounces cold-pressed cocoa butter or coconut oil

1 ounce white clay

4 drops cocoa butter essential oil (optional)

4 drops therapeutic-grade tea tree oil

5 drops therapeutic-grade lavender oil or oregano oil


Melt cocoa butter over low heat.

Remove from heat and add clay and essential oils.

Chill the mixture until the cocoa butter begins to harden.

Roll each bolus about the size and shape of the last two sections of your little finger.

Wrap boluses individually in wax paper.

Store in the refrigerator in an airtight, glass container.

Insert one bolus into the vagina as needed.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make a large supply at a time and store in fridge ~ they keep a long time.
  • You might only be able to make 4 boluses before mixture begins to melt, if this happens you can simply place the mixture into the fridge until it sets enough to start again.
  • Instead of rolling boluses by hand, you can fill up the fingers of a rubber glove (or ice cube tray) halfway up and let that chill. Or, try making a mold with aluminum foil that’s been folded several times lengthwise and width-wise to form a trough about 8″ long and 1/2″ wide. Or, you can purchase molds online; the one I have.
  • Prepare boluses using organic ingredients when possible.
  • Wear a sanitary pad to prevent clothes from staining.
  • Most women find it easiest to insert a bolus in the evening before bedtime and then shower in the morning.
  • Two other ways to use essential oils to combat yeast overgrowth here.

A word about The Body Ecology Diet

If you are bothered by vaginal yeast infections, I highly recommend The Body Ecology Diet (B.E.D.). There are so many good things to say about this way of eating. I think it is hands down the best ‘yeast killing’ protocol out there and I have studied a lot of them due to my own health journey and role as a Nutritionist. I personally started this diet in 2010 and continue to follow it’s underlying principles and shop with the stage 1 grocery list.

Don’t know where to start? Start with removing the BIGS (i.e. sugar, pasteurized dairy, gluten) ~ then think about introducing probiotic food (i.e. young green coconut kefirunsalted cultured vegetables) and ancient earth minerals. These dietary adjustments alone can do wonders at resetting the body.

Vaginal yeast infections, a.k.a. vulvovaginal candidiasis, tend to stem from an overgrowth of yeast in the inner ecosystem/gut. Under normal circumstances, yeast organisms are kept in control by probiotics/good flora that also live in the gut. But, sometimes we do something that allows the yeast to grow in #’s and become too many for probiotics control. This can happen when you take antibiotics or the birth control pill. If these yeast critters are allowed to get out of control, you can end up with a yeast infection; whether in the vaginal birth canal, penis, or like me … in the blood (systemic yeast infection).

Most important is to stop eating foods that yeast eat to grow and survive (i.e. sugar, gluten). When you avoid these foods, you starve the yeast. Eventually they starve to death and are eliminated out of your body; a process called “die-off”. This process can be accelerated by eating probiotic food on a regular basis. This is because the friendly flora in these foods embed themselves in your gut lining, where they grow in large populations and essentially push out the bad flora. Think of a bunch of friendly people moving into a ‘bad’ neighborhood; sooner or later the ‘bad’ people are going to leave or get kicked out. Practicing B.E.D. helps you accomplish the task of kicking yeast out because the foods allowed on the diet are ones that won’t feed excess yeast. Again, without the right food, yeast starve and die … and your body will have an easier time getting itself back in balance. 

If you are in the midst of healing a yeast infection with B.E.D. and feel itchy/burning in your vagina, don’t despair. You are likely moving through a period of cleansing while dead yeast are eliminated through the vagina and other body openings (i.e. mouth, nose, rectum). “Die-off” is common and a natural part of cleansing. Here are ways to manage symptoms of die-off like make a batch of unsalted probiotic food or pop in a bolus 😉
