Bolus Recipe for Vaginal Yeast Infections

IMG_5081

Boluses (a.k.a. ovules, vaginal suppositories) are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and provide many women with relief from vaginal yeast infections. These tube-like shapes are solid at room temperature but once inserted will melt; releasing the oils and herbs inside which absorb into the vaginal tissue.

I used to think vaginal yeast infections were part of being female and accepted them as normal. I used conventional methods to clear them up during my teen/college years; wishing they’d just go away. They didn’t and after my youngest was born, I began to get them with more frequency due to yeast overgrowth.

I no longer wanted to treat myself conventionally and chose boluses and The Body Ecology Diet (B.E.D.) to recover my health ‘down below’; a healing protocol rich in probiotic food and free of gluten, sugar, and yeast. Two months into the diet, and after moving through the notorious die-off, I no longer needed boluses to relieve the itchy, burning discomfort and I stayed on B.E.D. to further heal.

Ten years later, I’m in my 40’s and rarely get a yeast infection. If I do, they’re mild …. all I do is pop in a bolus before bed for nearly instant relief.

Here’s an online quiz to see if yeast overgrowth might be an issue for you.

Bolus Recipe

Ingredients

2 ounces cold-pressed cocoa butter or coconut oil

1 ounce white clay (a.k.a. kaolin clay)

4 drops cocoa butter essential oil (optional)

4 drops therapeutic-grade tea tree oil

5 drops therapeutic-grade lavender oil or oregano oil

Method

Melt cocoa butter over low heat.

Remove from heat and add clay and essential oils.

Chill the mixture until the cocoa butter begins to harden.

Roll each bolus about the size and shape of the last two sections of your little finger.

Wrap boluses individually in wax paper.

Store in the refrigerator in an airtight, glass container.

Insert one bolus into the vagina as needed.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make a large supply at a time and store in fridge ~ they keep a long time.
  • You might only be able to make 4 boluses before mixture begins to melt, if this happens you can simply place the mixture into the fridge until it sets enough to start again.
  • Instead of rolling boluses by hand, fill up fingers of a rubber glove (or ice cube tray) halfway up and chill. Or, make a mold with aluminum foil folded several times length/width-wise to form a trough 8″ long/1/2″ wide. Or, purchase molds; what I use.
  • Prepare boluses using organic ingredients when possible.
  • Wear a sanitary pad to prevent clothes from staining.
  • Most women find it easiest to insert a bolus in the evening before bedtime and then shower in the morning.
  • Two other ways to use essential oils to combat yeast overgrowth here.

Note: this recipe is for vaginal yeast infections only, consult a health care provider before using if you are pregnant.

A word about The Body Ecology Diet…

If you’re bothered by frequent vaginal yeast infections, I highly recommend The Body Ecology Diet (B.E.D.). I could go on and on about this way of eating. I have personally adhered to stage 1 of the diet for 3 years back in 2010 after being diagnosed with systemic yeast infection. Hands down, I think it’s one of the best ‘yeast killing’ protocol out there and my family and I continue to follow it’s underlying principles.

Are you suffering from Candida? Here’s a quiz to see.
